Wine Tasting in Northampton

Northampton Wine Society is a small and friendly group of enthusiasts who meet informally once a month in the Kingsley area of Northampton to taste and enjoy wine from all over the world.

NWS has existed in one form or another for some time. Originally founded by local wine merchant, Peter Watkins, it was run by Greg Shaw for some years until he handed over organisational duties to the current team in 2010. No one, not even Greg, is quite sure how long it has been going, but it seems to have been since at least the mid–1990s.

In general we hold our wine tastings at 8pm on the first Friday of the months from February to December. Normally we sample between 8 and 12 wines and there are spittoons if you don’t want to take too much alcohol aboard. It has become a tradition that during the course of the evening we try a selection of cheese from the fabulous St Giles Cheese, runner-up in the 2011 British Cheese Awards “Best New Cheese Retailer” category, accompanied by some good bread. The evening normally finishes around 10pm.

While some of our members are lucky enough to live within walking distance of where we meet, we don’t mind if you come from Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire.... or even further afield.

There is no annual subscription: we just tend to charge £20 a person per tasting. We are non profit–making and we aim simply to cover the Society's running costs.

Have a look at our list of tastings to see what we do, or our archive to see what we've done. At the moment we are in the fortunate position of having more members than we can accommodate if they all wanted to come, so we may not be able to invite you to one of our evenings immediately. But things change and people come and go so do contact us at or speak to for more details. You don’t need any specialist knowledge of wine appreciation to come along, just an interest in wine.
